We Heart It

This image scrapbook network is very similar to Pinterest. User "heart" images (similar to pinning) into collections (similar to boards). The only major difference is that there are no comments, and image captions cannot be changed.

There is a slight difference in user demographics and behavior. We Heart It users are younger (about 80% are under 24 years old) and the female percentage is even bigger than on Pinterest - over 80%. Thus, user behavior is more spontaneous and emotional. While Pinterest is used in a rather practical way - collecting recipes, DIY's, wedding ideas, etc. - We Heart It is used artistically, as a pure moodboard.

Dribbble is basically a merge of Pinterest and Behance. This visual scrapbook is targeted exclusively at designers, especially ones working with digital media. Users share snapshots of their works in progress.

Since this network is professional, there are no moodboards or random images here. All content was created by the users themselves, and the design quality level is high. Designers give feedback to each other, release free resources (icons, brushes, Photoshop actions, etc.) and even get hired for jobs.

This professional network appeared before the rise of the Visual Web, and is not entirely visual, but definitely worth a mention. Behance is a portfolio website, used by graphic & web designers, illustrators, photographers, architects and all kinds of visual artists.

Unlike other art sharing websites, which either get flooded with low-quality content or require uploads to pass through a curator to be approved, Behance is open for everyone and still keeps up a high overall level of work quality. The sleek, minimalist look and functionality of the website weeds out the non-professionals quickly.
